Insurance Industry Contributing to the Green Movement

The green movement affects every industry, even the insurance industry, which gobbles up huge quantities of paper every year. Most of the paper should be replaced with digital documents, saving trees and energy, and eliminating the wastes associated with transporting paper documents.

The insurance industry could avoid wasting huge amounts of paper every year. We advocate converting to maximum use of digital documents at every opportunity. It doesn’t take much imagination to give clients an option to receive their documents digitally rather than mailing mountains of paper every year. Who wouldn’t rather get their insurance documents in a digital format where they can be easily stored and rapidly retrieved? There is still a lot of room for making more use of paperless policies, applications, documents, and forms.

Going digital would save a lot of fuel, by skipping the transportation of paper also. Mailing and shipping insurance documents burns tons of energy every year. Much of that could be avoided.

I was browsing the website when it occurred to me to investigate what the insurance industry can be doing about green living. There is a lot of work to do, and I am pleased to see some industry leaders want to get into action. For example, the insurance Journal recently reported that the Environmental Defense Fund and Calif. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has recognized Fireman’s Fund Insurance Co. for contribution to “green” movement.

Fireman’s Fund is reported to offer green building owners a 5 percent discount on the policy premium for LEED-certified buildings. Vegetated roofs, plumbing and electrical systems, commissioning and the costs for green recertification fees for previously certified buildings are all included coverages that fill the gaps in traditional insurance policies. The company’s commercial insurance division has expanded its green offerings to include historic buildings, hotels, restaurants, manufacturing facilities and commercial auto. The specialty insurance division also offers green coverage for commercial buildings that are under construction.

Hopefully they are also working on transmitting more and more of their documents digitally, also.

Travel Insurance – To the Rescue Once Again

While traveling through Southeast Asia or any underdeveloped area, you would expect to encounter the odd illness from either eating food from the wrong location or that was washed with local water. The majority of them pass within 24 hours and without too much of an impact on your entire journey.

However, once in a while something is ingested, inhaled or has feasted on you that causes you to become very intense acquaintances with the washroom (or whatever they are calling a “washroom”). At this particular time in your trip you are wondering what the nest best choice is. Should you wait it out and hope it passes, while you risk serious dehydration and possibly various diseases? Or should you hop on the next tuk tuk and attempt explaining to them, while trying to hold it together, that the nearest, cleanest and possibly the most fluently English speaking hospital is where you’re headed?

We chose the international hospital in Cambodia when this happened to my friend while traveling in Asia. The fact that “International” was preceding “hospital” made us feel a bit more secure.

My friend had been seriously ill for over 2 days when we decided to bite the bullet and go to the hospital. We had been putting it off because we had a good idea of the challenges going to a hospital in a third world country would bring. But then I discovered that he had all of the symptoms that malaria brings and that after 24 hours without treatment Malaria can become a very serious illness.

To be completely honest, the hospital was not that bad. They did, however, have a serious mosquito problem, which is, in fact, what causes Malaria in the first place. They tool my friend in immediately and treated him with rehydration methods and gave him some blood work. They also offered him a medicine that would finally make him stop vomiting (and otherwise). All the while, I was standing there with an electric mosquito zapper, to fend the mosquitoes off my potentially Malaria-ridden friend.

The doctors eventually sorted him out and sent us to the front desk for the paper work. This is when we received a bill for $800.00 US. We had purchased travel insurance and were quite possibly the most thankful people on the earth in that moment. We had the type of policy that reimburses you when you return home. Most of these policies, however, will foot the bill upfront is the bill is quite high and you aren’t able to pay it. Phew! Another classic traveler’s experience, survived.

Motor Vehicle Personal Injury Insurance Claims

In January of 2005 it was written (and found within the confines of The Insurance Journal), “In 2003 more than 25% of automobile accidents resulted in bodily injury claim”.

PLUS: In a 2004 study (executed via Trends In Auto Injury Claims) it was stated, “Personal injury claims remain high”.

Records indicate that many people involved in automobile accidents, are embarrassed to seek medical attention because of what they’ve determine to be bumps and bruises, and they didn’t seem serious enough or because the onset of the symptoms did not immediately occur.

HOWEVER: Just as soon as possible, after an accident, an initial evaluation at a local Emergency Room is positively recommended!

THE REASON FOR THAT IS: X-rays can be performed which will generally rule out broken bones or factures. PLUS: Muscle relaxants and anti-inflammatory medications can immediately be prescribed so as to address muscle strains and/or pulls.

If the onset of a serious injury is delayed, the failure to have a medical complaint recorded will affect your physical recovery. Back and neck injuries (like a herniated disc) are not always immediately determinable. They are often initially diagnosed as “Soft Tissue” injuries before an MRI or a CT Scan reveals a disc injury. Normal x-ray film – – cannot diagnose a disc injury!

HERE’S SOME FACT’S OF INSURANCE CLAIM LIFE BY THE AUTHOR OF THIS ARTICLE – – WHO WAS INVOLVED IN SUCH MATTERS FOR OVER THREE DECADES! If the adjuster can prove it (and then attempt to hang his hat on the reason “Why” he’s refusing to pay a personal injury claim) he’ll often take the position of, “It’s because there’s been a long and serious delay in receiving treatment”. Or, “Too many time-gaps in the treatment have occurred”. Ending either one of those conclusions with, “So therefore it’s clear that the impact had absolutely nothing to do what the claimant was later complaining of and being treated for”.

“WHIPLASH”: Whiplash hurls your head backward (causing Hyper-Extension) and forward (causing Hyper-Flexion) the both of which will absolutely injure your neck. Whiplash has been determined to be the most common injury resulting from a car accident. It can cause injury to joints, discs, ligaments, cervical muscles and nerves.

A Whiplash can be short term or long life, because it can leave your neck forever vulnerable to injury. It leads to a long-term disability in 10% of those 1,000,000 people who have been “Whip-Lashed” (because of a motor vehicle accident in the United States) every year ! Records indicate that nearly 25% of those cases result in chronic pain and disability for an individual’s lifetime.

After a Whiplash injury your neck’s natural curve may be reversed, which can unevenly distribute the weight of your head and may furthermore misalign the vertebra. This can lead to arthritic degeneration and recurring pain. It’s a proven fact that 1 in 7 whiplash victims will still have significant pain more than 3 years after the accident!

According to research published in late 2004 “MOST CAR SEATS FAIL THE WHIPLASH TEST”, it was determined that almost two thirds (of what are advertised as “Normal” car seats) left motorists vulnerable to painful whiplash injuries. Of all the models tested 18 were rated as “Good”, 27 were rated as “Acceptable” however all of the others were rated either “Marginal” or “Poor”.

In a 2004 edition the National Association Of Mutual Insurance Companies stated that, “From 1980 to 2003, the Bodily Injury Claim rate increased by 19%”. They went on to say, “There were 1.05 Personal Injury claims per 100 insured cars”.

You’ve got to be wary of the insurance adjuster contacting you, requesting a statement so he can, “Settle your claim”.

In most instances the only reason the adjuster from the other insurance company wants your statement is so to determine if he can build a defense against your claim or make his payment to you, as low as possible. More often than not adjusters contact you (under the pretext of helping you to settle your claim) and then attempt to use the information they’ve obtained – – to minimize or deny your claim.

Unless the Police Report clearly places the fault on the other driver you must be very careful how you “Handle” and/or “Deal” with the adjuster assigned to your case because the adjuster is paid, and moved up the claims ladder, partly because of what he knows, and learned on-the-job, about insurance claims, but mostly because of how profoundly he’s capable of taking advantage of those who have a legitimate one.
